Delines is visiting Jeungdo, one of the islands in an archipelago made up of one thousand and four islands. This island is connected to the neighboring ones by a bridge. It has a grocery store, post office, police station, and both an elementary and middle school, along with eleven churches. Most of the island's residents work in farming or salt fields. Over 90% of the islandโs 2,000 inhabitants are Christian, giving it the highest rate of evangelization in the country.
The island has achieved an ecological โGrand Slam,โ having been designated Asia's first slow city1, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and a Ramsar Wetland. The tidal flats are home to over 100 species, including mudworms, fiddler crabs, shore crabs, and mudskippers, as well as more than 70 species of halophytes like Suaeda, common glasswort, and samphire. Endangered species such as the black-faced spoonbill, Baikal teal, and Far Eastern curlew can occasionally be spotted.
As a no-smoking island, cigarettes are not sold in its grocery stores or convenience stores. Instead, they're sold under the table at a hardware store near the market. When the store is closed, foreign workers from the salt fields can be seen lingering on bicycles outside the store. A note on the door reads: โOut working In the field..โ A white dog and the bloodshot-eyed owner sold me a shovel for digging in the mudflat.
People either remember this island as a place of enslavement2 or as a treasure island3.

The Slow City movement, which began in Italy, is an initiative aimed at creating โslow townsโ that preserve the unique natural environment and traditions of a region. It is awarded to towns that maintain their local food, culture, and way of life, embracing a slower, more sustainable pace of living.

The Salt Farm Slave Case refers to the 2013 incident in Shinan, where two disabled individuals were rescued after being exploited with unpaid wages and confinement at a salt farm. One of them, who was visually impaired, endured 19 hours of hard labor daily and physical abuse. Despite attempting to escape three times, his efforts were thwarted by local residents who reported him. Known as the "island cartel," the locals, including police officers, were all familiar with one another and were presumably churchgoers. On his way back from a barbershop in town, he managed to send a letter to his mother, which he had prepared in advance, through a mailbox. This case, revealed by his motherโs report, made Shinan infamous as a region of forced labor and human rights abuses.

The 1984 recovery of the Shinan treasure ship is regarded as one of the most remarkable achievements in Korean maritime archaeology. Since the 1950s, rumors had spread that a treasure ship was buried off the coast of Shinan, but local residents often used iron anchors as fishing weights and Chinese blue and white porcelain as dog bowls and chamber pots. It wasnโt until looters started swarming the waters near Shinan that the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs began underwater excavation. After the first emergency excavation, 112 pieces of pottery, including 52 celadon items, were recovered from the sea. The treasure ship, which resurfaced after 700 years, contained a large quantity of artifacts, including 8 million coins. These artifacts, believed to be smuggled goods from China to Japan during the Goryeo Dynasty, were unearthed in significant numbers. Despite calls from civic groups and scholars in Mokpo and other parts of South Jeolla Province to house the relics in the nearby region, all the artifacts from the Shinan treasure ship were ultimately transferred to the National Museum of Korea.

Before the bridge was built, the islands were connected by several โNoduโ paths, which appeared at low tide and submerged at high tide. These paths, made by piling up small stones, allowed people to walk across, where they could see crabs and mudskippers endlessly burrowing into the mudflats. As you quietly approach, the crabs, true to their crustacean nature, raise their pincers and snap them in the air. Although the roads are quiet, crushed crab shells are so abundant they're like gum stuck to the ground. Colorful crabs can be found crawling everywhere, from the mountains to inside houses.
Mudskippers, which breathe through gills underwater and through their skin on land, are well known as a delicacy for making nourishing soup since they donโt have a fishy smell. Their name comes from their habit of sleeping for long periods in winter, but theyโre sensitive to sound, so they are caught using fishing lines. Their monster-like appearance as they hop across the mudflats covered in mud inspired the creature in the movie The Host.

Where boats come and go, tents are set up for repairing nets. Wooden boats dock along the waterway, which is revealed twice a day by the lunar tides. These two wooden boats, reminiscent of small whale skeletons, are called Heungchang-ho and Jilja-ho. Until 1984, they were sailing ships that transported salt to the mainland. Heungchang-ho could carry 600 sacks of 50 kg each, and Jilja-ho could carry 2,000 sacks of 50 kg each. However, as most salt transport vessels were replaced with steel boats and the bridge was constructed, salt transportation shifted entirely to land routes. In honor of the two wooden vessels that once carried salt along the waterway, the residents have laid them to rest at an abandoned dock, which has now become a salt cafรฉ and salt museum, almost as if holding a funeral for them.
Skilled captains of wooden boats are those who can read the terrain of both land and water. They must navigate by following the channels created by the ever-shifting mud. These are the people who carve paths by tracing the marks of the currentsโthe constellations of the archipelago.
Salt crystals form in perfect shapes. 70% of the salt consumed by humans is mined from rock salt, and only 30% is produced from seawater. The crystals of salt, made by drawing seawater into salt fields and evaporating the moisture with wind and sunlight, are cubic, with sodium and chlorine in equal proportions.
The salt fields here, consisting of a reservoir, evaporation ponds, and crystallization ponds, are also perfectly cubic, with each square measuring 15 by 15 meters, covering an area three times the size of Yeouido. The sea salt produced by this company is rich in minerals and has been classified as a food rather than a mineral. The โsalt flowers,โ once harvested, continue to grow both inside and out. The more space within the particles, the higher the quality of the salt. Harvesting begins around 6 AM, with the salt being collected by 4 PM. The salt is stored in warehouses for six months to remove brine. With the detailed plans for the release of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant, the price of sea salt here has surged.

This island is also famous as the martyrdom site of a female missionary, called the โHen of the Gospel,โ who was executed by communist forces in the tidal flats. After her marriage, her husband started a new life on a neighboring island, while she cared for her in-laws for 20 years. She began her faith journey after learning to read from her father-in-law. Her first mission field was the island where her husband lived. The sorrow of not having children and her martyrdom at the hands of the communists have become a favorite tale in the church, turning this island into a pilgrimage site.
She had a voice like a nightingale and was known for her continuous singing of hymns. She traveled tirelessly, serving as a nurse, midwife, postwoman, and watchman. She wore out nine pairs of rubber shoes each year, spreading the gospel from island to island, always mindful of the tide times and the Nodu paths. The words and songs she sought to deliver between the islands were carried by these tides.
In the memorial hall, her worn-out rubber shoes and a broken placenta bowl are on display. At the entrance, the words โRegeneration, Sanctification, Divine Healing, and Second Comingโ are written in order. Every week, in the pioneering church she founded, the eldersโ hymns and the choir's special songs are sung through high-powered amplifiers in accordance with the farming season.
